Your Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to your most frequently asked questions. If they are not answered here, you can call us at 330-569-7621 and we'll be happy to answer any questions you have about our boat rentals.

Q
Do I have to make a reservation?
A
It is highly recommended to make a reservation. Booking online guarantees the boat you want on the day you want to come.
Q
What should I bring for my trip?
A
Bring drinks and snacks, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, extra clothes and rain wear when the weather is cold or rainy. Camp Hi will supply a paddle, life jacket, and your boat of choice to paddle.
Q
Do I need to be an experienced paddler?
A
The gentle current of the Upper Cuyahoga River (2 to 3 mph) is fine for beginners to experienced paddlers. You can check our Facebook page or call us for information on current and water levels due to rain. Camp Hi staff can also provide instruction when you arrive and you can view our safety and instruction video on our website. Just be sure to book the length of your trip that you feel you and your family will be able to manage.
Q
Can I bring my child?
A
Children 3 years of age and sitting up can go with you in a kayak or a canoe. We provide life jackets for up to 30 pounds or you may also bring your own. Our tandem kayaks and canoes will hold a family of four or five, and remain stable. Plus we offer discounts for children who sit in the middle of a canoe.
Q
Can my child take his or her own kayak?
A
Yes, but you need to determine the length of the trip based on the age. Children age 10 and up usually have the strength to last a long trip. All children should be told to wear their life jackets and to keep with their group at all times.
Q
Where do we put in and take out?
A
Listen to staff instructions as to where you will launch your boat. Then look at the available map, and stay with your group until you get to the location to take out your boat. Groups must have a lead boat and a tail boat to ensure everyone stays together. Safety is important so paddlers should wear a life jacket at all times.
Q
When must I return at the end of the day?
A
Camp Hi expects you to check in all your rental equipment in good condition at or before 6:00. Deposits may be forfeited and fines assessed for lost or abandoned equipment. Please call ahead if you know you're going to be a little late.
Q
What should we do if we're having trouble during the trip?
A
Use your cell phone and give us a call. Our staff can help give instructions or send someone out to help. Often, other people on the river can offer help as well. If there is an emergency, try to get to a bridge and dial 911 for help.
Q
What will I expect to see my trip?
A
The Upper Cuyahoga River is largely undeveloped and has a lot of wetlands and woodlands full of flowers and wildlife. People see beaver, muskrat, otter, turtles, Blue Herons, and many more water birds and songbirds. The beauty of this unspoiled river shows what it was like 10,000 years ago. This beauty still exists in Northeast Ohio.
Q
What do I need to do if we want to fish?
A
Adults can fish at Camp Hi for $5 per person with a fishing license, children are free. You can also take your fishing pole with you and fish for free on your boating trip. Just be careful of the hooks, especially with children.
Q
Can we overnight camp at Camp Hi?
A
Yes, as long as you are a boater. We have 5 primitive campsites with outhouses that you can rent at $10 per person ($20 minimum per site per night) with prior signup. You need to bring your tent, sleeping bags, food, and water.
